Welcome To FRS 2 Way
Radio!
- The
FRS 2
Way
radio is the name for a walk-talkie
-
There are several manufacturers that currently make the radios.
-
Typically, the radios can communicate up to 2 miles from each other.
-
They operate on batteries, mostly AA batteries.
-
Many people have found them to be a good alternative to cell phones in that they are less expensive to use for
certain things.
Possible Uses
For instance if you are working in an office and
you have people on loading docks or in another part of the office, an frs 2 way radio will allow you to reach
another person without having to run from room to room or place to place.
Hunters use the radios to keep in touch with their
hunting buddies. In the event one of them is injured, it may be the only way they can reach someone to let them
know they need help. Parents give them to their kids so they can be in constant communication with them. They
are small enough that a kid can hook them to their belt loop and be able to get in touch with a parent if they
need to. They can check in on a regular basis with their parents to let them know they are OK.
When you are shopping at the mall with friends or
family members the frs 2-way radio is a great way to find each other when you are ready to move on to the next
store or when you are ready to meet back at the car. People use them at amusement parks. If your kids don't want
to necessarily hang out with you all day, this allows you to at least communicate with them whenever you need
to.
If you are on a road trip with a group and are in
several different cars, you can communicate back and forth as you are going down the highway. If someone gets
lost, you can easily get them back on track. Many people use them while on sky trips to stay in touch or on
vacation at the beach. If you live in a multi-level house, they are good to use to finding other family members
rather than running up and down the stairs.
Advantages and Disadvantages Over Cell
Phones
As mentioned earlier, they are less expensive to
use than cell phones. They seem to have clearer sound than most cell phones too. As long as you are not too far
away, you will not experience interrupted service like you do sometimes with cell phones. Typically, the charge
lasts longer than a cell phone charge. The main disadvantage over a cell phone is that you are restricted to
about a 2 mile range with an frs 2 way radio, so its uses are limited. You may have connection problems
depending on the terrain. Mountainous terrain may give you trouble connecting. In cities with tall buildings you
could have difficulty also.
How to Operate the
Radios
The frs 2 way radio is easy to operate. You put
the batteries in, turn it on and set the two radios to the same channel and same code. Listen for other people
using the same frequencies. Look for new channel and code until you find one that is not being used. Push the
button to talk. When you are finished talking simply release the button to listen. If you continue to push the
button, you will never be able to hear other people talking to you.
